William was born about 1722 and some have his birth in Scotland and others in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia&#8217;s Gov. Col. Alexander Spotswood first discovered this Great Road in 1716.<br \/>\nIn 1744, a treaty between the English colonists and the Indians gave the white men control of the road for the first time. William and his wife Mary settled near Doe Hill, Virginia about 1743.
