Jeremiah was born about 1735. He passed away before 1817.<\/p>\n

Jeremiah Meador was born about 1735 in Essex Co., Virgina.\u00a0 He was the son of William Meador (1706-1759), son of Richard Meador (1672 – before 1716), son of John Meador (1659-1721), son of Thomas Meador, Jr. (1639-1661), son of Thomas Meador (ca. 1613-before June 6, 1655) who immigrated from England to the Isle of Wight Co. Virginia before 1630, when his headright (50 acres for passage) was surrendered to John Gater.\u00a0 About 1650, Thomas moved to (old) Lancaster Co. (now Richmond Co.) on the Rappahannock River, where he died in 1655.\u00a0 Thomas’ will named two sons, John and Thomas.<\/p>\n

Jeremiah’s mother was Frances (Phitzsimmons) Meador who died January 2, 1770. The first mention of Jeremiah in legal records was in Essex Co., Virginia, when he was named in the will of Mary Phitzsimmons, his grandmother.\u00a0 In her will (June 4, 1756, WB 10, pg. 95), she names, among others, her grandson Jeremiah, son of William.<\/p>\n

The Meador family began their move to Amelia Co., Virginia about 1745.\u00a0 Apparently, Jeremiah followed as soon as he was old enough.\u00a0 His first purchase there was July 17, 1765 (DB 8, pg. 676), when he bought one of the 22 acre tracts from the grant of Jason Meador, witnessed by Benjamin Meador. Jeremiah sold this land July 23, 1767 (DB 9, pg 86).\u00a0 He witnessed a deed from Joel Meador to Benjamin Meador, and deed to Henry Meador December 19, 1767.<\/p>\n

James Ray sold Jeremiah Meador 154 acres in Amelia County on July 9, 1768 (DB 10, pg. 12).\u00a0 Benjamin Meador sold him 66 acres, formerly belonging to William Ray, February 25, 1773 (DB 13, pg 333), and the rest of his property (202) acres the same day (page 335) by Jeremiah and Caroline Meador.\u00a0 (This establishes the name of his first wife.)\u00a0 At this point, they removed to Bedford Co., Virginia.\u00a0 Jeremiah Meador of Amelia Co. purchased 750 acres on Stony Fork of Goose Creek in Bedford Co. on November 27, 1776 (DB 5, pg. 486).\u00a0 He later sold portions of this tract to William Meador and Benjamin Meador.\u00a0 (This William was NOT his son – his wife was Lucy, so he was the son of Ambrose Meador.\u00a0 His own son was only a teenager then, born 1765-9, married 1787.)<\/p>\n

Jeremiah firstly married Caroline –?–\u00a0 probably in Amelia Co., probably around 1760 (estimated from his elder son’s marriage in 1787 – which would make each man about 25 years at marriage).\u00a0 There are no accounts of old marriages recorded in this court.\u00a0 The Clerk thinks the reason for this is that the old ministers lived so far from the Court House that they just neglected to record them. Caroline died by 1812 when Jeremiah married Elizabeth, the widow of Ambrose Wood.\u00a0 Jeremiah was in his middle 60’s at the time of that marriage.<\/p>\n

Jeremiah settled on the Staunton River on 1,000 acres of land.\u00a0 His will was probated in 1816-17.<\/p>\n

Will Book D1-4, Page 296 Recorded 27th January, 1817 Clerk’s Office, Bedford County, Virginia \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0WILL OF JEREMIAH MEADOR April 30, 1816 \u00a0I Jeremiah Meadow of Bedford County, Virginia, being in a low state of health, but of sound memory, it is my will and desire to dislpose of my worldly property as follows: \u00a01st.\u00a0 It is my desire that my debts be paid out of my movable property. \u00a02nd.\u00a0 I give and bequeath to Jeremiah Meador, my grandson, his heirs and assigns forever, one-third of my land, to include the plantation whereon he now lives adjoining Jeremiah Jordan’s line to extend equal distance on McGeorge’s line, and my spring branch, as it meanders to make the said one-third part. \u00a03rd.\u00a0 I leave to my affectionate wife, Elizabeth, the use and benefit of the other two-thirds of my land, and all my movable property, during her life or widowhood. \u00a04th.\u00a0 I give to my granddaughter, Fanny Whitworth, one-third part of my land to be laid off by one line adjoinging McGeorge Meador and Richard Meador’s land, to have possession of at the end of my said wife’s life, or widowhood. \u00a05th.\u00a0 I give and bequeath to my grandson, Martin Meador, son of Richard Meador, the other one-third of my land which will include the house I now live in, to have possession of when my wife dies or remarries. \u00a06th.\u00a0 I give to Thomas Armstrong twenty dollars provided he lives with my said wife until he is twenty-one years of age, or during her widowhood. \u00a07th.\u00a0 It is my will and desire that at my wife’s death or marriage all my personal property be equally divided amongst my three children, William, Richard and Mary. \u00a0Lastly:\u00a0 I constitute and appoint my wife, Elizabeth, and my son, Richard, my executrix and executor, of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other wills by me, and acknowledging this my last will and testament with my hand this the 30th day of April, 1816. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 his\u00a0 (X)\u00a0 mark \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jeremiah Meador Witnesses: \u00a0James McGeorge \u00a0\u00a0Edward McGeorge \u00a0\u00a0Jeremiah Jordan \u00a0 Probate:\u00a0 27 Jan 1817<\/p>\n
