When Martha “Mattie” Elizabeth Ann Butler was born in October 1843, her father, Powell<\/a>, was 42, and her mother, Derecy nee McCormick<\/a>, was 31.\u00a0 Some record indicate she was born in Summers County but her death record says she was born in Bedford County, Virginia.\u00a0 Bedford County is very likely because her mother, Derecy, had family from there.<\/p>\n

She married John Allen H R J S Williams<\/a> on December 26, 1865, in Mercer, West Virginia.\u00a0 They had eight children in 14 years.<\/p>\n

The year 1881 was bad for this family.\u00a0 Their daughter Julia died January 7, 1881, Mary died November 10, 1881,\u00a0 and Rebecca died sometime after the 1880 census. Martha died on October 14, 1881, of ‘fever’ in Pipestem, West Virginia, at the age of 38.\u00a0 Her burial location is in Williams Cemetery in a remote location off of Butterfly Lane in Summers County, West Virginia along with her husband and some of their children.<\/p>\n
