{"id":97,"date":"2017-04-01T02:17:16","date_gmt":"2017-04-01T02:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/?page_id=97"},"modified":"2025-04-23T14:02:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T14:02:20","slug":"medora-emma-dora-armstrong-ancestor-11","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/?page_id=97","title":{"rendered":"Ancestor 11 &#8211; Medora Emma &#8220;Dora&#8221; Armstrong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-175\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/dora_armstrong_lance_1-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/dora_armstrong_lance_1-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/dora_armstrong_lance_1-768x1103.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/dora_armstrong_lance_1-713x1024.jpg 713w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/>Lovely lady! \u00a0When Medora &#8220;Dora&#8221; Emma Armstrong was born on August 16, 1858, in Upshur, West Virginia.\u00a0 She was the second daughter to her father, Harvey Armstrong, 24, and her mother, Margaret McCoy, 20.\u00a0 Dora&#8217;s parents had just moved from Highland Virginia to Upshur, Virginia shortly before her birth.\u00a0 The war between the states ravaged the area and Upshur area became part of West Virginia in 1863.\u00a0 And article was published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/wp-admin\/upload.php?item=1227\">Highland Recorder<\/a> on July 20, 1951, of an\u00a0 interview with Dora Lance, and in her own words she tells stories and memories about that war.\u00a0 Dora maintained a daily diary and was an avid writer.\u00a0 It is unknown to me how she became so well educated in the era when literacy was not required of a woman.\u00a0 The location of the original diary in not known, however, I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/diary_dora_armstrong.jpg\">one copied diary page<\/a> where Dora notes the marriage and some work details about her grandson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/?page_id=12\">Garland Francis<\/a>.\u00a0 There are also some surviving postcards that were written in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>She married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marysfolly.com\/?page_id=94\">William H Washington Lance<\/a> on October 7, 1880, in Upshur County, West Virginia.
